In 1858, near a grotto outside the small village in southwest France, a 14 year old peasant girl named Bernadette Soubirous gathered firewood. She heard a strong wind and looked up. A dazzling light shone from the grotto, surrounding a beautiful Lady dressed in white. The Lady wore a white veil, a blue sash and yellow rose on each foot. She held a rosary in her hand, smiled at Bernadette, and motioned her to say the rosary. When they finished, the Lady vanished. In the next few weeks, the Lady appeared to Bernadette 18 times. She urged penance and prayer for sinners. She asked that a chapel be built on that spot. She ultimately revealed, "I am the Immaculate Conception." With each apparition, crowds increased to pray with Bernadette.
During one apparition, the Lady directed Bernadette to was and drink from the fountain. She pointed to a patch of ground. Bernadette scratched away at the surface, and a spring of water trickled to the surface. And it grew. One day, a desperate mother with dying child brought him to the spring and bathed him. The child recovered. Since that time, thousands of cures have been reported, and the church has recognized 69 miraculous cures. The spiring, which today produces 27,000 gallons of water per day, became a fountain of hope and healing for millions of pilgrims who visit each year. In 1862 Church authorities confirmed the authenticity of the apparitions. In 1907, the Feast of Our Lady of Lourdes became worldwide. Lourdes has become a place of pilgrimage, healing and faith. After the Apparitions, Bernadette became a nun and devoted her life too praying for the conversion of sinners and to the service of God. While still young, Bernadette developed tuberculosis of the bone and after much suffering , died on April 16, 1879, at the age of 34. Bernadette was canonized as a saint in 1933. Her body remains incorrupt to this day.

Remember O Most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to your protection, implored your help, or sought your intercession was left unaided. Inspired by this confidence, I fly unto you, O Virgin of Virgins, my Mother. To you I come, before you I stand, sinful and sorrowful. O Mother of the word Incarnate, despise not my petitions, but in our mercy, hear and answer me. Amen.
