On May 13, 1917 in the small village of Fatima, Portugal, a vision of Mary appeared to three shepherd children: Lucia dos Santos, 9, and her cousins Francisco Marto, 8, and Jacinta Marto, 6. "A woman all in white, more brilliant than the sun," said Lucia later. She wore a white mantle edged with gold and held a rosary in her hand. "I come from Heaven," she said. She asked them to "say the Rosary every day, to bring peace to the world and an end to war." Our Lady appeared six times to them, between May 13 and October 13 of that year. She revealed that if the world did not make reparations for sins, it would undergo violent trails by war, famine, and persecution of the Church. She asked the children to carry this message to the world. She also revealed three prophetic secrets. The first was a terrifying vision of hell. The second was a prediction of world War II if society did not change its ways. The third predicts further suffering and persecution of a man in white clothing, thought to be the pope. Accounts of the visions of the children spread through Portugal, and soon pilgrims began journeying too Fatima. Our Lady appeared to the children for the last time on October 13, 1917. On the day 70,000-100,000 spectators witnessed to Miracle of the Sun. Although it had rained heavily that day, witness report seeing the sun emerge through the clouds, dance, scatter colors and plunge from the sky towards the earth, finally returning to its normal resting place. When it was over, everyone's soaking clothes were perfectly dry. Francisco and Jacinta died in the flu pandemic that began in 1918. They were canonized in 2017 as the youngest, non-martyred saints of the Church. Lucia became a Discalced Carmelite sister and lived to age 97, continuing to spread Our Lady's message of Fatima: "My Immaculate Heart will be your refuge and the way that will lead you to God."
