The name Orthoceras means "straight horn"and they are closely related to the Ammonite. They were squid like creatures with a hard exterior shell which lived during the Paleozoic Period, over 400 millions ago.

In retrospect, might have preferred the 40mm version, since the 30mm is slightly over an inch in diameter, but the larger costs over twice the price of the 30mm. Still, a beautiful piece from Indonesia. This plus another from Morocco came well-packaged and quickly from Austin, TX. Thanks!
