Although he is the Patron Saint of Ireland, Patrick was born in what is now Scotland. When he was just 16 years old, he was captured by pirates and taken as a slave to Ireland. He lived there for six years before escaping and returning to his family. His years in captivity fostered his spiritual development, and he became fluent in the Irish language and culture. After his return home, Patrick studied at a monastery in France and was ordained a priest, and later a bishop. He had a vision of the people of Ireland who cried, "We appeal to you, holy servant boy, to come and walk among us." Moved by this vision, Patrick returned to Ireland as a Christian missionary and bishop in the year 432. His task was not easy. Ireland was divided into various Druid tribes who practiced polytheism (belief in many gods). But Patrick was a prayer warrior and fearless in proclaiming the Good News. Upon his arrival in Slane, the chieftain of one of the tribes tried to kill him. Through God's intervention, Patrick ended up converting the chief and his whole tribe. Patrick used the Irish people's culture and nature to explain the truth of God, famously using the three leaves if a shamrock to explain the doctrine of the Trinity: three persons in one God. Patrick spent the rest of his life with the Irish people, establishing over 300 churches and baptizing over 100,000 people. It is believed that March 17, 461 was the day of his death and birth into eternal life.
