There are three readings in the Bible that tell of Jesus visiting the home of Martha, and there is a phrase in John's Gospel that says "Jesus loved Martha and Mary and Lazarus very much." Through these readings, we learn of the special relationship that Jesus had with Martha, her sister, Mary, and her brother, Lazarus. During the first visit of Jesus as told in the book of Luke 10:38-42, it was important to Martha that she serve Jesus and his disciples with hospitality and generosity. Jesus helped Martha to realize that listening to Him was even more important than worrying about the many task of serving guests. The book of John 11: 1-53 tells of the next visit of Jesus, when Martha is mourning the death of her brother Lazarus. During this visit when speaking with Jesus, Martha proclaims her belief in Jesus as the Son of God, and her faith that Lazarus would rise again in the resurrection on the last day. This is when Jesus raised her brother Lazarus from the dead. The telling of the last visit with Jesus in John 12: 1-9, gives us a clear picture of Martha serving Jesus without false impressions or commotions, and with simple dignity of purpose.

St. Martha, you were privileged to serve Our Lord here on earth, and you learned the importance of listening to His words. When your brother Lazarus died, you proclaimed your belief in Jesus and experienced the joy of your brother's resurrection. You served Our Lord and followed Him to the foot of the cross. By your example, help us to serve our brothers and sisters here on earth, proclaim our belief in Jesus and follow Him to our own cross. In our service of others, help us to recall the words of Our Lord, "Whatever you do to the least of my brothers, you do to me." Intercede for us, and when our days on this earth are finished, let us share in the joy of the resurrection of all the saints in lory. In Jesus's name, we pray. Amen.
