St. Jude, also called Thaddeus, was one of the 12 Apostles of Jesus. He was the brother of another Apostle, James the Less, both probably cousins of Jesus. At the Last Supper, Jude asked, "Lord, how is it You will reveal Yourself to us and not the world?" Christ responded that the world was not qualified for divine manifestations, but He would honor those who truly love Him. And Jude was satisfied. After the Ascension and Pentecost, Jude preached in Judea, Samaria, Mesopotamia and Lybia. He returned to Jerusalem in 62 A.D. after the murder of his brother, Simeon, as bishop of Jerusalem. It was at this time that he wrote an epistle to all the churches of the East, warning against heresies. This epistle is included in the New Testament today. Afterwards, he returned to spreading the Gospel, traveling to Persia and Armenia, where he was martyred. His remains lie in a crypt in St. Peter's Basilica next to another Apostle, St. Simon the Zealot. Pilgrims came to St.Jude's grave to pray and many reported powerful intercession. Two saints, St. Bridget of Sweden and St. Bernard, had visions from God asking them to accept St. Jude as Patron Saint of the Impossible. Evidence of this saint's efficacy can seen daily in the ads thanking him newspapers and on the Internet. St. Jude is often pictured wearing a medallion with an impression of Jesus that was used to cure the Kind of Edessa of serious illness. The flame shown above his head represents the Holy Spirit descending upon him and the other apostles at Pentecost.
